Politics has existed for as long as there have been organized societies and governments. Over time, political philosophies have been introduced, some are accepted, while others are scorned at. The political ideologies that persist to this day are usually grouped into left and right wing. Generally, the left consists of those who adhere to philosophies of progressivism, social liberalism and democracy, socialism, and communism while those on the right are those who follow philosophies of conservatism, capitalism, and nationalism. In the US, left and right are associated with liberal and conservative, respectively, and generally identified with the Democratic Party and Republican Party in that same order.

Adherents of left-wing political ideologies support social change to create a more egalitarian society. They also believe that government intervention in commercial and industrial sectors is necessary and are staunch advocates of policies that protect fundamental rights like freedom of expression and religion. They are also known to support for social policies that favor the racial, ethnic, and sexual minorities and the working class.

Those who take a right-wing political position on the other hand uphold conservative views. They also promote deregulation of banking, commerce, and industry. During discussions of right-wing politics, common sense conservative philosophies are frequently touched upon. Common sense conservatives assert that left-wing policy makers are entangled in their fantasies of an unachievable utopian society.

Those who uphold common sense conservative views assert that politicians, rather than running the government based on what they think would work, must run it based on established precedents and norms. Looking at conservative blogs you can see that adherents to this political philosophy support minimal change in society. Conservative blog owners and readers tend to also promote policies which follow or protect Christian and traditional family values.

Over the years, the distinction between the left and the right has become not as rigid, as it is possible for a person or a party to take a left-wing stance on one issue, and a right-wing stance on the other. Nonetheless, this variance in political ideologies will need to persist into the future because this will serve as a driving force that will propel a nation forward. Having opposing political ideologies in a legislative chamber will encourage debate, and the public is assured that proposals of government policies have undergone sufficient criticism before they are enacted.

Those who support common sense conservative ideologies assert that left-wing politicians are entangled in their own fantasies of having an unachievable utopian society. Those who hold conservative views are also staunch supporters of policies that uphold Christian and traditional family values.
