Valuing Magic The Gathering Cards – Determine The Value Of Your MTG Collection
Aug. 18, 2010 No Comments Posted under: Toys
If you are planning to sell any Magic the Gathering cards, its important to have the idea of the value of your cards before you begin. This is important so you know whether you are dealing with cards that are worth quite a bit of money, or cards that are worthless; that last thing you want to be doing is wasting your time selling something that is basically worthless.
Obviously, the value of cards are exceptionally variable, however, you can broadly set out valuing Magic the Gathering cards via their rarity.
Rare and Mythic Rare Cards
By their very definition, these cards are the hardest to get hold of, so tend to be higher in value. This does not however guarantee a high value.
When first released, rare cards tend to have a value range anywhere from 50c to $10, whereas mythic rares have a slightly larger range of around $1 to anywhere up to $50 for those really highly sought after cards.
Consulting a Magic the Gathering seller’s site is a very worthwhile thing to do when looking for a guide to the value of your cards. These prices can be somewhat inflated from an auction selling price however, so the best thing to do is to consult a site such as eBay to see what other auctions for the same cards have sold for – this is the best guide for you.
Uncommon Cards
These cards are less sought after than rares and mythic rares, and hence are worth a good amount less. The most you could generally expect to get for the most sought after Uncommon cards is between $1 to $2, and this is the exception rather than the rule. Generally speaking, most uncommons have little value, and are only worth a few pence.
If you want to sell uncommons, I’d recommend selling them in play sets (4 copies of the same card) at a minimum, if not in a larger bulk quantity (for example, 20 or 50 different uncommons in one lot).
Common Cards
The lowest in value is obviously common cards. The common Magic the Gathering cards are very numerous and easy to get hold of, hence they have almost no value at all. If you wish to sell common cards from your collection, its only worthwhile doing it in large bulk lots (say, hundreds or thousands at a time). Even then, the amount you get will be low.
This guide is a very general one, and there will be exceptions to these rules, but it should give you a rough idea of what your cards could be worth should you wish to sell them. There is the most variation with rare and mythic rare cards, so the recommendation is to make sure you evaluate their worth before you begin.
One main variation that should be noted is for the oldest Magic the Gathering cards from sets such as Alpha and Beta. There are many cards from these sets which defy these rules, so if you have any cards from these sets, always check their value first before selling – even common cards could be worth considerable amounts of money.
Hopefully this guide will help you understand the value in your Magic the Gathering cards before you begin; you can then put your effort into the most valuable cards, and most importantly, not waste you time and money trying to sell cards which no one wants.
