A revolutionary games console design, Nintendo Wii console, their successor to the Game Cube was originally conceived in 2001 and was unveiled in 2005. The Wii, originally dubbed the Revolution has gone from strength to strength, becoming more popular than any of its competitors and still tops worldwide sales charts in 2010. Conceived as a games console for everyone, the Wii unusual yet memorable name comes from the word “we” which aptly captures the spirit of the design.

After the flop that was the Game Cube, Nintendo needed something remarkable to blow away stiff competition from their main rivals, Sony’s Play Station 3 and Microsoft’s Xbox 360. These consoles already dominated the console world with their fantastic graphics and processing capabilities so Nintendo decided on an alternative more risky route which would completely redefine the way console games are played.

Nintendo had a vision to redefine the interface and user experience of the console meant a big step away from the traditional two handed controller on which console gaming has been based for many years, instead using an innovative controller based on accelerometer and gyroscopic technology which allows users to feel as if they are really part of the game.

The Wii has a completely new controller design allows for a far more intuitive gaming style, doing away with the complex learning curve of traditional controllers whilst lending itself perfectly to a variety of new and exciting gaming experiences. Games which would have been difficult and clunky on a traditional controller such as fishing, shooting or sword fighting games were given a new lease of life in which the gamer can actually swing the sword or aim the gun at the target. The Wii has given rise to a number of additional controllers which further enhance the experience such as gun attachments, tennis rackets and steering wheels.

An intentional part of the Wii concept in creating a console for everyone was the intuitive design which due to the low learning curve means that practically anyone can just pick up a controller and play. Parents and even Grandparents could now join in the fun with their children and Nintendo have released a huge variety of games to capitalise on this fact, from games aimed specifically at children or adult markets to fun games that the whole family can enjoy.

The philosophy that the Wii should be a console for everyone meant that the console should not just be marketed at traditional gamers and so programmes such as Wii Fit were developed, targeting the keep fit demographic, allowing people who loved to exercise to do so in the comfort of their own home without the need for expensive equipment or gym memberships. Turning exercise into fun made the Wii appealing to parents who could entice their children into a more active lifestyle under the premise of a game and additional controllers have been developed for this purpose which allow users to simulate all kinds of exercise from simple tennis racket shaped controllers to the Balance Board which simulates riding a skateboard or surf board.

As much of gaming today is aimed at online games, the Wii caters for this brilliantly with on board Wi Fi and wired connections allowing users to connect to the internet for online gaming or browsing using the installed Opera based browser.

What does the future hold for the most futuristic games console? Rumours include high definition upgrades allowing better graphics and video along with innovative new technology which lets the console learn and adapt to your movements, greatly enhancing game play and providing a new level of artificial intelligence. Whatever is on the horizon, you can be sure that the concept behind the Wii is here to stay.
